Blessed by devoted parishioners and strong pastoral leadership, Assumption Parish’s history is marked by beautiful transformations.  Beginning with Italian and Irish immigrants, these founding parishioners mortgaged their homes to build the church that we have today.

Important dates
  • In 1876, Church of the Assumption was established in a little white clapboard building on an acre of land on the Post Road.
  • In 1899 the Assumption parishioners and their pastor, Rev. James P. Ryle, made plans to build a new church at the corner of Burr Road and Riverside Avenue.
  • On April 22, 1900, the first service held in the new church was Fr. Ryle’s funeral mass who passed away fifteen days prior to the dedication.
  • In 1934, the parish grounds and church experienced significant upgrades, including the installation of our signature stained-glass windows.
  • In 1993, a significant milestone was reached with the Renaissance Project, a testament to our commitment to continuous improvement. This project revitalized the interior of our church, breathing new life into our sacred space and inspiring us to continue our faith journey with renewed vigor and dedication.
  • In 2003, our new organ was installed, enhancing our music ministry.
  • In 2007, the conversion of the former convent into Roncalli Parish Center increased available space for Religious Education, ministry and fellowship.

The Church of the Assumption is about to achieve a significant milestone in 2026.  We will be celebrating our 150 years as a parish community . . . strong in tradition and committed to living the gospel message into the future.

Through the generosity and dedication of our parishioners, we have preserved our church’s beauty and the vitality of our various ministries.

As faithful followers of Christ and mindful of all the gifts we have received, we now embark on a new endeavor to preserve our beloved Church not only as a Westport landmark, but the spiritual home of past and future generations.
